Ask Our Stylists Series: Over-the-Knee Boots That Work For You

Today in the Ask Our Stylists blog series, stylist Meredith Garcia breaks down over-the-knee boots for one of our lucky readers:

Fashion Dilemma: I’ve been seeing over-the-knee-boots all over the runways, on celebrities and in magazines, but I am not sure how to wear them.  What are the best ways to wear this trend?

Tips From Stylist Meredith Garcia: Well for starters, I am a firm believer that you can and should wear the trends the way you feel most comfortable and that best represents your personality.   I’d also like to believe that there are no real rules when getting dressed, but with this trend there is a fine line between classy and Pretty Woman… hooker… eh hem… I think you know what I mean.

So, I have put together a few looks that can incorporate some pieces from your closet and work well with the over-the-knee boots trend.

The Girlie

Obvious choices are dresses or skirts that fall about 1-3 inches above the top of the boots.  This look is still very feminine, with a little bit of edge thrown in for good measure.  Personally, this is my go-to look because it allows me to pair dresses that I may not get to wear in the winter months with tights and rockin boots.

For this look, feel free to wear monochromatic tights or complimenting thigh-high socks. These Eric Michael boots are a perfect offset to the girlie dress.

The Boyfriend

This look screams comfort and effortless, while maintaining major sex appeal.  The structured, yet oversized top is set off by the long silhouette that the boots have created.  Don’t be afraid to go baggy, but do keep in mind that comfort doesn’t need to look messy.

These Jeffrey Campbell shoes from Urban Outfitters are an accessible and great choice to compliment the overall look.

The Skinny

This is a hard look for many to pull off.  For the average lady (we aren’t talking models who are 5’10), start with a flattering pair of skinny jeans.  Then find a boot that widens at the top- I recommend these that are currently on sale at intermix- can’t go wrong!

The Glam

Take a cue from Marc Jacobs this holiday season and pair an eye catching mini dress with a pair of killer heeled boots.  This look is not for the faint of heart, but is the kind of look that exudes confidence.   These from Stuart Weitzman are worth the investment.

The Relaxed

This is the most practical of all the over-the-knee looks.  It can only be described as relaxed.  Pair with your favorite pair of leggings and a killer top or sweater and you are good to go.  Dress it up or dress it down- this look can take you from day to night.

These boots from TopShop are the perfect accessory to take you wherever you are going.

The Gaga

Enough said……….. This is only for the ultra daring- Not exactly a practical look, but if you got it- flaunt it!
